Torture ban update
President George W. Bush did a good thing today, and should be commended for it. He agreed to the torture ban. Full stop. No immunity for people who break the rules, no CIA exception. Read the story here:

The bill with the torture ban amendment still has to make it all the way through Congress before the President signs it, but today's agreement makes me optimistic.
And so many Iraqis voted that they had to keep the polls open an extra hour.
So I will talk about Iran on a different day. Today was a good day.

I would say that I was terribly thrilled with this development, but the timing seems a bit odd. Could it possibly have anything to do with the wiretap allegations that are being hurled every which way? I guess we'll never know.
You raise a good point, Victoria, and I think it makes perfect sense to be skeptical of the motivations of any politician. As a general rule, I care a lot about motivation, not least because it gives us an idea of how a person will act in the future. Still, I'm thrilled with concrete developments like torture bans even if the underlying motivation is less than pure.

Here, here! (at least, I think that's how it goes)
Have a merry Christmas, ladies!
All terrorists and those who wish to commit crimes against the people of the United States should be shot - no questions asked nor required.
That would go for anyone entering this country from another country under any means that are not legal. It should be considered a form of espionage and those doing so should be shot - no questions asked nor required.
Who is this creepy "happy john" kid?
Man, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, especially since I dont know you and got to your site through Uncertain Truth (slow day at work), but unfortunately it would be an inaccurate statement to say that Bush agreed to the torture ban. I cant remember the exact words, but legally what he did was to say 'I agree to it, until I no longer agree with it.' He left the option open to change his mind at any point. That left me sad. I would've loved to see some strength from him on this issue. I'll see if I cant find clarification on the exact words he used.
