The Michigan Primary -- A Lost Cause????
So since it's been nearly 6 months since anyone posted anything here, I thought I'd try to break the silence. Hope no one minds that the subject is Michigan politics.
With less than 90 days to go, Representative Martin Griffin (D-Jackson) is trying to push legislation to cancel. To read more, click here http://blog.mlive.com/citpat_extra/the_skinny/
What do you think of this idea? Or of the primary situation in general? Or the party rules regarding when states can hold primaries?
It does kind of stink that Biden, Clinton, Obama, and Richardson won't be on the Democratic ticket, but is that a reason to give up the election? I could maybe see not having a primary if most of the Republicans weren't going to be on their ballot either.

I'd have to say that primaries in general are a lost cause. With candidates picking and choosing which states to run in and states constantly moving up elections to stay 'important' or whatever, it's pretty clear that the whole thing is pointless. I hereby propose that all states hold their primaries on the same day and all of the candidates be on every ballot, including Stephen Colbert. :-)
Why don't we all just vote on the same day???
It would be impossible, of course, for the candidates to campaign in every state right before the primary, but they don't really campaign in every state now, do they? Just the ones that are first in the primaries!
I tend to agree. And I'm considering not even voting in the primary this year because it's so ridiculously early. Do we really need to be narrowing the field to two measly candidates ELEVEN months before the national election?! I think not.
In other news, have you seen any of these debates that have been going on? Most of them have been on cable so I haven't, except that News 8 carried the Republican one that was in Detroit a few weeks ago. My parents taped it for me and we watched it when I was on fall break last week. I've decided that watching debates is better when you can rewind and mock the candidates multiple times. Here are a couple of my favorite moments:
Q: [I don't remember the substance, but it gave a choice between two alternatives]
Giuliani: I feel like we're on the verge of going one way or the other.
Q: What do you think is America's greatest economic weakness moving forward?
Romney: Our sense of optimism.
[His subsequent comments made it clear that he thought this was our greatest strength. Love it when they listen to the question!]
I don't actually enjoy the debates that much.
Some people feel the need to watch every single one and are of the belief that by watching them, they will somehow be able to narrow their choice down to one candidate or confirm that their pre-chosen candidate is THE ONE.
Debates usually just make everyone look less competent to me.
The key is to determine who has demonstrated the lowest level of incompetence during a given debate. Or, in the case of the Republican debate I saw, determining who did not want to burn the Constitution. My picks for least-scary Republican candidates at the moment are Ron Paul and Fred Thompson. Sadly, Sam Brownback is out of the race. I'm not positive I could have voted for him, but I thought that MAYBE I could. Anyway, I don't think Paul has a prayer, and I'm not that excited about having Thompson as a president. Because you know there are people who will vote for him just because he was on Law & Order.
Are the Democrats looking any more promising? At all?
Actually, I think everyone's scary. Maybe I'm just afraid to vote. Considering the results of my last two votes, fear might be justified.
